Dixie County, Florida’s 59th County established in 1921, was created from Lafayette County. You may have skirted its borders with its location about 50 miles west of Gainesville. Dixie county is situated between Tampa and Tallahassee on U.S. 19. The Gulf of Mexico serves as its western border and is the perfect sanctuary for seafood harvesting. Suwannee and Steinhatchee Rivers are Dixie’s eastern, southern and northern borders. These rivers provide excellent water activities and drain into the Gulf of Mexico at quaint fishing villages.

  • Cross City

It is a relatively safe community to live in, with its people being very caring and friendly. The town served as an essential destination for the lumber industry. Cross City is the largest town in Dixie County and carries the county’s seat.

  • Horseshoe Beach

If you are heading to Horseshoe Beach, forget about swimming and sunbathing along sandy shores. But if you are in for a fishing session, you are on the right track. While Horseshoe Beach is relatively isolated from ‘civilization,’ this town offers some of the most remarkable offshore and inshore fishing on the Big Bend.

  • Old Town

Approximately 10 miles southeast of the county seat of Cross City, this town features two historical sights: the Old Town Elementary School and the Circa 1890 Old Town Methodist Church.

  • Suwannee

Suwannee is an incorporated modern town of Dixie County located on the Florida Gulf Coast near the mouth of the famous Suwannee River. This area is very popular with kayakers.
