UNITED STATES – Kimberly Van Der Beek has shared an emotional tribute to her late husband James Van Der Beek on the first Father’s Day since his passing, posting a carousel of family photos on Instagram alongside a heartfelt message honoring the actor and father of their six children.
James Van Der Beek, best known for his role in Dawson’s Creek, passed away in February at the age of 48 after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer. His death was confirmed on his official Instagram account on February 11.
Kimberly Posts Moving Words From the Heart
In her Father’s Day post, Kimberly wrote that she was missing James deeply and thinking about how magnificent he was in every single way. She added that somehow, even from the other side, he continues to parent, calling him a marvel.
The couple shared six children together, daughters Olivia, Annabel, Emilia, and Gwendolyn, and sons Joshua and Jeremiah.
Daughter Emilia’s Words Touched the Hearts of Many
The tribute comes months after a moving video posted in March, on what would have been James’s 49th birthday, showed his nine-year-old daughter Emilia speaking directly to others who have lost someone they love.
In the clip, Emilia shared that she talks to her dad every day, beginning each conversation by saying she misses him and loves him. She encouraged others grieving a loss to let their emotions out, cry if they need to, and talk to the person they’ve lost.
Emilia said she knows her dad is in a good place and free from pain, but acknowledged it’s still okay to feel sad. She also gently reminded viewers not to blame themselves when someone they love passes away, describing it as not a good strategy for getting through grief.
James himself had shared the news of his cancer diagnosis publicly in October 2024, and had been open about his treatment and outlook in the months that followed. His passing announcement described him as meeting his final days with courage, faith, and grace.
