Forecasters Warn of 100 MPH Winds From Intense Bow Echo Targeting Northwest Oklahoma Down Into Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA – Forecasters issued an urgent warning late Saturday night alerting residents across a large stretch of central Oklahoma to brace for potentially destructive winds reaching up to 100 mph within hours, driven by an intense bow echo moving from northwest Oklahoma down toward the Oklahoma City metro area.

The warning, posted at 11:45 p.m. CDT, described the threat as imminent and urged residents across the affected zone to take immediate precautions before the storm arrived.

Large Zone From Northwest Oklahoma Down to OKC Metro

The highlighted threat area covers a wide swath of central Oklahoma, stretching from communities along Highway 412 in the northwest, including Fairview, Okeene, and Watonga, southeastward through Hennessey, Okarche, and Geary before pushing into the Oklahoma City metro area, including Edmond, Mustang, and Norman.

Communities such as Thomas, Arapaho, Hinton, and New Cordell also fall within the outlined risk zone, meaning the storm system threatens both rural and suburban areas across a broad corridor of the state.

Bow Echo Capable of Destructive, Straight-Line Wind Damage

Bow echoes are among the most dangerous radar signatures in severe weather, capable of producing straight-line winds that can match or exceed tornado-force gusts across a wide geographic area. Unlike a tornado, which concentrates damage along a narrow track, a bow echo can deliver destructive winds across dozens of miles simultaneously, making the threat widespread and potentially catastrophic for anything in its path.

Residents across the affected area were urged to move indoors immediately, stay away from windows, and secure any loose outdoor items ahead of the storm’s arrival.
